Jim Duthie FRACS


Jim is a graduate of Otago University. He received his FRACS (Urology) after a fellowship in Complex Pelvic Cancer Surgery and Robotic Surgery at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. As well as completing over a hundred robotic surgeries in under a year, Jim has published on robotic surgery, written an electronic manual on Robotic Prostatectomy, and written content and lectured on courses for surgeons transitioning to robotic surgery, and become a robotic surgical assistant. Jim was instrumental in the acquisition of a new Si Da Vinci robot by Grace Hospital, which includes the first robotic surgery simulator in New Zealand.


As well as prostate cancer, Jim has an interest in kidney cancer and kidney stones, and is the lead author of the Cochrane Review on botulinum toxin (Botox) for over active bladder (OAB).


Jim has diverse interests. He has developed two free smartphone apps for prostate cancer patients, and consults on website design, interface, and content for health related websites. He is active in social media, and moderates the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s electronic news feed. He has a degree in Psychology and two years study towards a Law degree. He is a blogger for The European Medical Journal, and The British Journal of Urology International.

When he has a spare moment after his three kids are in bed, Jim enjoys taking his Fender Stratocaster and picking out Mark Knopfler tunes.
