Penile Prosthesis

Inflatable penile prosthesis

For men who have erectile dysfunction which is not helped by medication or injection treatment, an option is insertion of an inflatable penile prosthesis. This involves surgery under general anaesthetic, and the procedure takes about 1 hour. The device has 3 parts; a pump, which is situated in the scrotum, a reservoir which holds fluid which transmits to the third part, two chambers which fill with fluid, creating an erection on demand.

On the right patient this is an excellent treatment. There are some downsides however. The device is very expensive, but is usually covered by medical insurance. With any foreign material there is always a risk of infection. This infection risk is higher in men who are overweight, smokers, or diabetic. The other risk with this type of surgery is that there is always a small risk of the device failing. In men who have not had any luck with other treatments, a penile prosthesis can be an excellent treatment.
