PSMA PET scan

Full body scan

A PSMA PET scan is a full body scan designed to detect any spread of prostate cancer.

It is commonly used as a diagnostic test in men who have high grade prostate cancer, where radical treatment such as surgery or radiation is contemplated. It can also be used in advanced prostate cancer to determine the course of treatment.

It has advantages over other types of imaging such as CT scan or MRI scanning, as it detects PSMA (prostate specific membrane antigen) anywhere in the body. This type of scan creates images like a CT scan, but also will "light up" if there is cancer present.

We use PSMA PET scans frequently through radiology practices in Hamilton and Auckland.

  • The cost is approximately $3000, and is often covered by medical insurance.
